NYX TOTAL CONTROL DROP FOUNDATION REVIEW

The dropper and bottle for the NYX Total Control Foundation

This buildable foundation formula has intrigued me since it was released nearing the end of 2016. NYX Total Control Drop Foundation claims to be your ideal coverage – just use as many drops as you want to create your custom coverage! It’s totally customizable – create a sheer or full coverage base with it’s dropper system that lets you control exactly how much you want to use! For just $16 CAD, it’s claims sounded pretty remarkable. Last week, I decided to make a trip to the NYX store at Yorkdale Mall to get colour matched and have been wearing this foundation every day since.

Now let’s jump into my thoughts

For $16 this bottle contains 0.43 fl oz, which is less than half of the standard foundation. Although, it is affordable, it realistically costs nearly as much as a high-end base product when you look at volume. Being a makeup collector, I rarely finish a full foundation, so I actually don’t mind at all that this bottle is smaller, because I am more likely to actually get good use out of it and finish this bottle! And I’m certain that I will be able to finish it, because so far I am very happy with everything about this formula.

This formula is completely buildable, just like it is marketed. I like to start with 2-3 drops (and add more as required) then buff the product using my Real Techniques Buffing Brush or even my fingers to really work the product for seamless coverage. As this is quite a thin, water based formula, a sponge will soak up so much of the product and sheer out the coverage and require a lot more layers to build up. It sets very quickly on my skin, and as it is quite normal (neither dry or oily) I’ve actually preferred the demi matte finish look without setting powder. In the summer, I am certain that I will be in need of powders or setting sprays, but right now I am happy with the finish and coverage it provides on it’s own! Even without powder it lasts the entire work day on my skin, but I do bring Too Faced Cocoa Powder Foundation with me everyday in case I need to combat oils and add more coverage.
Although this formula isn’t the most accessible (it is currently only available online or at NYX stores in Canada) I do suggest trying it if you are able to get your hands on it! As you can see above, the coverage is amazing, and I think this is now going to be my go-to for events as it lasts so well with a weightless feeling and does not contain SPF.
Have you tried this formula from NYX? What were your thoughts?
